Bruce S. MacDowell, Jr.

Principal

Bruce owns and oversees all aspects of The MacDowell Company’s operations. Through a dedicated involvement in every facet of the company, Bruce diligently maintains the high standards of customer care, design and craftsmanship that The MacDowell Company has become known for. His central focus is not only creating a landscape environment and home the client can enjoy for a lifetime, but also providing an enjoyable project experience for the client.

Bruce has had a lifelong involvement in landscape industry. As is a MacDowell family tradition, Bruce was introduced to the masonry and landscaping trades at an early age. Through many years of hands-on experience in masonry construction, landscape design and plant installation, Bruce has developed a unique and comprehensive understanding of all phases of the design and construction processes. Beyond general business management, design and project management, Bruce specializes in site assessment, materials selection, budget estimation and permitting.

Bruce was certified by The University of Massachusetts’ Green School with a focus on landscape management. He graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara with a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science.

Roy S. MacDowell, Jr.

Founder

Roy founded The MacDowell Company in 1965 and through his dedicated, hands-on approach, grew the company to become a leader in the landscape architecture and construction industries. From the beginning, Roy’s approach has been based on a very clear commitment to excellence in design, craftsmanship and the highest standards in all phases of every project. For more than fifty years he has perfected his knowledge of materials, site selection, design and construction.

Roy is a central figure in the company’s client relations, design and project management. He focuses on providing and upholding high quality customer care and ensures that the design and construction product meets the most meticulous standards. Roy’s direction and involvement has been the hallmark of the firm’s success.

Outside of The MacDowell Company, Roy has served as both President of the Board of Trustees of The Rivers School in Weston, MA, and as a Trustee of the Children’s Hospital Boston Trust Board. He was a board member of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) New England. Roy is a past board member of Babson College, where he studied as an undergraduate, Sterling Bank, the Charles River Museum of Industry and the Waltham Boys & Girls Club.

Clayton S. MacDowell

Senior Project Manager / Field Operations Manager

Serving as both a Senior Project Manager and the Field Operations Manager, Clayton is central in all aspects of design implementation and construction operations. With 20 years of professional experience, Clayton melds his keen attention to detail with generations of family industry knowledge and expertise to ensure the success of each project.

As a Senior Project Manager, Clayton facilitates pre-construction coordination between clients, landscape architects and contractors. He actively continues to manage construction implementation, project budgets and schedules throughout the project installation. These and many other aspects of Clayton’s role as a project management are vital to the success of all facets of each project.

As the Field Operations Manager, Clayton utilizes his highly developed organizational and scheduling skills to manage multiple teams of construction personnel, equipment and materials. To Clayton, it is essential that The MacDowell Company creates a collaborative environment where each team member not only works towards achieving the common goal of a successful project, but is also encouraged to pursue personal and professional growth. Whether by leading through example or by hands on instruction, Clayton is instrumental in the development and advancement of each MacDowell Company field team member.

Outside of work, Clayton enjoys music, road trips and spending time in the mountains backpacking.

Mike Nowicki, RLA

Landscape Architect / Project Manager

Mike, a Registered Landscape Architect, serves as Lead Designer and Project Manager with over eighteen years of diverse professional experience. While specializing in high-end residential design, Mike also has an extensive background spanning large-scale mixed-use projects, academic and institutional planning and design, public streetscapes and urban roof gardens. Mike earned a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he graduated with honors, as well as an Associates of Science in Landscape Contracting from the Stockbridge School of Agriculture.

The focus of Mike’s work and philosophy centers around the enrichment of the human experience — developing and refining unique place making, as well as exploring the interplay between site context, physical and emotional connections, architecture, spatial sequencing, and proposed design elements. During the design process, Mike continuously finds inspiration in the creation of artful and enduring spaces by thoughtfully collaborating with clients and consultants, fostering distinct design concepts and ideologies, as well as implementing elegant solutions and custom details that directly correspond to the specific opportunities and challenges posed within the landscape.

Outside of work, Mike, can often be found hiking and skiing the White Mountains of New Hampshire with his wife and twin girls, relaxing at the family lake house, visiting family in the Berkshires and desperately searching for some time to play a round of 18 holes.

Jeffery Plant, RLA

Landscape Architect

Jeff is a Registered Landscape Architect with more than 20 years of experience in site planning and design, covering a diverse range of project types including commercial, institutional, and residential. His design background includes extensive work within multi-disciplinary settings, providing him with an understanding and an appreciation for developing a logical, cohesive approach to landscape design.

Jeff graduated with distinction and received his Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from West Virginia University in 2000. He attained professional licensure as a registered Landscape Architect in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 2009. For the past decade, Jeff has focused primarily on designing and developing elegant, luxurious residential properties throughout New England.

Jeff’s design philosophy is simple: approach each project as a unique, individual design challenge. Listen to the Client. Listen to the site. Add Inspiration. Rely on experience. Develop a thoughtful, practical, compelling solution.

As a Senior Landscape Architect at the MacDowell Company, Jeff is responsible for managing multiple design projects simultaneously. His wide-ranging responsibilities also include proposal writing, project permitting, and construction management and administration.

A native of New England, Jeff was born and raised in northern Vermont. As a child he became enamored with the outdoors, and early in life became an avid outdoorsman. In his free time Jeff can be found roaming around the woods, walking trails or fishing with his wife, daughter and their two dogs.

Julian Salvucci

Landscape Designer / Graphic Designer

Julian joined The MacDowell Company in 2018 and quickly established himself as an essential part of the team. His positive attitude, boundless ambition and passion to achieve excellence in all aspects of the landscape design and construction industries are evident in his rapid acquisition of experience and skills development.

As a Landscape Designer for The MacDowell Company, Julian strives to create ecologically sustainable, functional designs tailored specifically to each client’s specific needs. Julian also takes great pride in not only delivering a great design product, but an enjoyable experience to the client.

Julian is also the company’s lead Graphic Designer. With supreme technical ability and knowledge of the latest graphic design programs, Julian oversees all graphic design products, including illustrative color renderings and 3-D models.

Finally, Julian is one of the central driving forces behind The MacDowell Company’s marketing, social media and a variety of other crucial roles that aid to the growth and development of the company.

Julian holds a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree from the University of Rhode Island and is in pursuit of his professional licensure as a Registered Landscape Architect. He also has several years of field experience in landscape construction and horticultural management.

Julian is an avid outdoors enthusiast and outside of his professional endeavors, he enjoys gardening, as well as camping, hiking and snowboarding in the mountains and lakes regions of New England.

Erick Swenson

Project Manager / Designer

Erick Swenson is a designer for The MacDowell Company, involved in everything from site design to graphic design. His specialty is 3D modeling and graphic analysis of the projects and materials used. His skills provide the client with a clear and comprehensive vision of what a project can look like well before the ground is broken. Additionally, Erick is responsible for Design, Project Management, Permitting and Marketing. Coming from an Architectural background Erick brings his experience from numerous architectural firms and a 5 Year Bachelors of Architecture Degree at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, Massachusetts.

Kathleen W. Fenn

Office Manager

Kathleen has handled the administrative duties for The MacDowell Company since she joined the firm in 2005. She serves as the firm’s office manager and is responsible for communications with prospective clients, vendors, and media outlets. Originally from Maryland, Kathleen graduated summa cum laude from Goucher College with Bachelor of Arts degrees in both Studio Arts and International Relations. She is also a licensed Notary Public for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
